When does Advent start?

In Western Christian calendars, Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, so the date changes from year to year. Commercial Advent calendars commonly begin on December 1 and count down through December 24.

Advent countdown versus Christmas countdown

The Advent countdown tracks the beginning of Advent, while the main Christmas countdown tracks December 25. If you use a traditional Advent calendar, the December 1 date may be the more useful starting point.

Two different starting points for the season

The First Sunday of Advent changes date each year, while many numbered Advent calendars begin on December 1. The Sunday shown by this tool is the Western Christian calendar date between November 27 and December 3. This is a date-based planning countdown; the timing of evening worship is a separate matter.

For example, the First Sunday of Advent in 2026 is November 29, two days before December 1. Someone following a December calendar would open the first numbered door on December 1 rather than treating the earlier Sunday as door number one.

Plan activities around the calendar you use

For a Sunday-based family plan, choose one activity or gathering for each of the four Sundays. For a December calendar, prepare a set of short daily activities that fit your routine. A mixture of drawing, reading, sending a message and helping at home can work without buying a new item each day.

If you are planning a church event, use the congregation’s own schedule for services and observances. Customs vary between Christian communities, and this countdown does not claim to represent every liturgical calendar.

What does zero mean after Advent starts?

Once the displayed Advent date arrives, the result stays at zero for that Christmas season. It means the start has passed, not that Advent itself lasted zero days. The tool moves to the next Christmas season after December 25 has finished. You can still use the Christmas countdown to see how much of the preparation period remains.

The USCCB explanation of Advent describes the four-Sunday season in the Roman Catholic calendar. Compare the dates here with Christmas Eve and the Christmas Day countdown.
