Why does the weekday change?

A common year has 365 days, so the same calendar date moves forward by one weekday the following year. A leap year adds an extra day after February, which changes the weekday pattern by two positions for dates later in that year.

Use the live countdown for the current Christmas

For the exact time remaining to the next December 25, return to the live Christmas countdown.

Read the date table without assuming a holiday entitlement

Christmas Day in this table is always December 25 in the Gregorian calendar. The weekday changes, which can help you begin planning family gatherings, travel and annual leave. A Friday Christmas may sit beside a Saturday-Sunday weekend, but that does not tell you which days your workplace will close.

An observed public holiday can fall on another date under local rules. Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and substitute holidays are separate entries in many official calendars. Check the relevant government or employer schedule before booking leave or assuming that a bank, school or business will be closed.

Examples of the weekday pattern

December 25 falls on Friday in 2026, Saturday in 2027 and Monday in 2028. The shift between the last two dates is two weekdays because the interval includes February 29, 2028. Leap years affect the weekday pattern, but they do not change Christmas Day to a different December date.

The table rolls forward with the countdown’s Christmas season and provides 15 years of dates. It is useful for checking a future weekday without creating a separate page for every year. The top row may therefore change after Christmas Day has finished.

Use future dates as an early planning aid

Start with the year and weekday, then add the event details you actually know. A family gathering can happen on a nearby weekend if that works better for travel. Mark a provisional date clearly until the host, venue or workplace confirms it.

Some communities observe Christmas according to a different church calendar. This table describes December 25 dates only; confirm the date used by the people or congregation you are planning with. For the current season, return to the main countdown or check working days.
